Rules of capitalization

Here's a question, we may want to discuss. When should the word "god" be capitalized in our writing? Should pronouns, such as "you," be capitalized when referring to God? Should the names of all "gods" be capitalized? How would you capitalize this sentence: "This man seems to make Money his God."?

3 Comments:

  • I always capitalize "He" and "Him" or any other word related to God to show reverence for His holiness and holy name.

  • Here are the standard "rules"...

For a "generic" god --lower case. For something acting like a "generic" god, also lower case.

Therefore, "money" or some other "idol" would be lower case.

For Christians, the Holy Trinity is initial capped. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. --all initial capped. Any additional names for God--Yahweh, Jehovah, and so on--are also initial capped (not only are they proper nouns/names but they refer to God as well).

Personal pronouns referring to God are also initial capped... therefore, "He", "Him", and "His".

For proper nouns (thus, names) such as Buddha, Baal, Nebudchanezar, Ralph, George, David, Ruth, and so on... in English, the proper nouns/names are initial capped.

If, as a Christian Writer, you want to get published by a Christian Publishing House, these are good editorial principles to follow (you'll give the editors fewer headaches).

However, if you are writing for yourself and you feel that you "don't need no steeenkeeng rools" *grin*... then, go for it and just write in the manner that comes to your mind. (Just kidding. Really, standards aid with readability!)

    I hope this was helpful!
